HAPPY MASHUJAA DAY!
What is Mashujaa Day?
Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes' Day, is a national day in Kenya, which is observed on 20th October as a public holiday to collectively honor all those who contributed towards the struggle for Kenya's independence or positively contributed in the post-independence Kenya.
This is the general concept that Mashujaa Day was formed for, a day to celebrate those who fought for Kenya’s independence. Now let’s get a little bit closer to home. Many of us don’t know, except form our history classes, those who fought for our independence. Celebrating people who we don’t know might be somehow tricky that is why many of the Kenyans are not able to celebrate this holiday as it should be. We meet up and celebrate ‘a’ holiday but not ‘the’ holiday. So how can we be able to personalize this holiday? How can we be able to celebrate this holiday as we cannot all go and sit in Nyayo Stadium?
First of all this is a day to celebrate your heroes. The people in your life who have fought for you to be where you are. The ones who bent over backwards to ensure you are where you are today. I don’t know about you but I am my first hero. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t decide to fight to live in so many occasions. Other than that, the others who contributed to your growth either financially, physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally, these are the people who we need to celebrate.
- Your parent/guardian who ensured you didn’t lack anything that they were able to provide; that is your shujaa.
- That teacher who encouraged you not to give up and to work harder in school; that is your shujaa.
- That friend who has constantly been nagging you to invest in yourself; that is your shujaa.
- That significant other that has held onto the promise of through thick or thin; that is your shujaa.
So as much as we say THANK YOU to the ones that fought for our independence, let us also thank those who have personally contributed to our growth; OUR HEROES. If this is you, HAPPY MASHUJAA DAY TO YOU.
